A foundation is defined as a public corporation established for the purpose of pursuing non-profit public projects.

The mission and role of the Ishibashi Foundation, whose competent government agency is the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, is to contribute toward the advancement of culture by promoting and supporting art and education. Since its establishment in 1956, alongside the operation of its museums, the Foundation has been supporting school and organizational activities and projects which promote education, art and internationalization.

Embracing the challenges of the 21st century, the Ishibashi Foundation is developing new projects centering on entrepreneurship, humanistic causes and internationalization, while reinforcing its tradition of reliability and solid reputation.

A new model of foundation is sought after for the new millennium.
